Across the course of 11 ‘flower-garage’ tunes, each catchier and more chaotic than the last, HYESTJFAVHS? establish themselves as one of the most exciting and infectious bands to come out of Scandinavia in recent years.

The trio have carved out a unique sound for themselves, opting to use keyboards instead of guitars. This is after songwriter Ekku Lintunen and drummer Janne-Petteri, on seeing the film Drive, instantly decided to form an 80s synth-pop band as a side project to the garage-rock act they were in at the time. When Susse Stemma-Sihvola came in on vocals, bringing her scuzzed out bass tones with her, it ended up being garage-rock with a twist.

They are further shaped by the aesthetic and sonics of the underground cassette culture punk bands in their small town of Kouvola rely on, as well as the thread of styles that have tied the towns musical history together through the decades. A mish-mash of 60s girl-groups, punk, glam, grunge and NYC/Manchester indie coming together to generate their electrifying style.

Lintunen likens his songwriting to crafting surreal movies. Starting with a picture in his mind, he throws out lyrical phrases to create this image for the listener. Enough is held back though that there are more questions than answers. Like all great films, the listener interprets as they do.

Throughout, the album is two-tone. At times playful, and pop-centric, at others darker, more intense. Across the 11 tracks presented HYESTJFAVHS? make whimsical references to He-Man, and Modern Family’s Phil Dunphy as well as including a track titled Hanky Panky. However, there’s also a sadder element – it’s a semi-breakup album, half the tracks written pre- and post-. Hence, there are explorations of both the excitement and disappointment of love.

After their debut album Teenage Sweetheart was released in autumn 2015 the trio have been praised in the international music media, and gathered fans around the world. This includes support from BBC Radio’s Huw StephensSteve Lamacq, Phil TaggartChris Hawkins and Tom Ravenscroft, and the likes of Consequence of SoundForbesDrowned in SoundsMTV IggyThe Line of The Best Fit and Clash Magazine.

As well as the above media acclaim, they are routinely picked out as livehighlights at Europe’s buzziest festivals (Roskilde Festival (DK), Flow Festival (FI),Pohoda(SK), Reeperbahn Festival (DE), The Great Escape (UK), Farm Fest (UK), Kendal Calling (UK), Eurosonic (NL) and Europavox (FR).

Leave a Comment – View’s long awaited debut album Out Now!

View - Leave a Comment cover artView, AKA 25 year old Juuso Ruohonen, proffers a confessional, confident debut album, ‘Leave A Comment’, out today via VILD Recordings.

Following the release of the hard-hitting, ‘Trippin’ Sober’, and softer, more intimate gems ‘Deeper (Bitch Leave a Comment)’ and ‘Say It Again’ which are centered around laid-back vocals by Ronya and Kasmir, View’s debut LP demonstrates the multi-talented artist’s ability to switch up his sound to capture a spectrum of genre and mood. Grime, hip-hop, ballads, dub step; it’s all present and crafted so exquisitely that it triumphs at every hurdle.

In conjunction with the release of ‘Leave A Comment’, a 3-part music video will be released promoting album highlights ‘Do It Again’, ‘Burn Slow’ and ‘Bad Habits’.

Have You Ever Seen The Jane Fonda Aerobic VHS? is officially back with magic swimming pants on!

After successfully releasing their debut album ‘Teenage Sweetheart’, Have You Ever Seen the Jane Fonda Aerobic VHS? return with a new single ‘Magic Swimming Pants’. Out on VILD Recordings on July 28th.

‘Magic Swimming Pants’ is somewhat typical HYESTJFAVHS?-tune with its raw sound, earworm-melodies and surreal lyrics. “An Anthem of late summer for the freeminded.”, describes Ekku Lintunen, the Casio wizard of the band.

Along the release Have You Ever Seen the Jane Aerobic VHS? head over to the UK for three festival shows. On the last weekend of July the band is playing LeopalloozaFarmfest and Kendal Calling.

After their debut album release in fall 2015 the Finnish garage pop trio has been praised in the international music media and they have gathered fans around the world. The band has claimed support from the likes of well known BBC DJ’s Steve LamacqHuw StephensPhil Taggart, Chris Hawkins and Tom Racenscroft. They have been featured on Consequence of SoundForbesDrowned in Sounds, MTV Iggy, The Line of The Best Fit and Clash Magazine to name a few. Their concert highlights include performances at Roskilde Festival (DK)Flow Festival (FI)Pohoda (SK)Reeperbahn Festival (DE)The Great Escape (UK), Eurosonic (NL) and Europavox (FR). Among bigger festivals HYESTJFAVHS? played their first UK-tour in fall 2016.

Jane Fonda VHS 2 by Heidi Kero

Consisting of Susanna Stemma-Sihvola (vocals & bass), Ekku Lintunen (keyboards & vocals) and Janne-Petteri Pitkälä (drums), Have You Ever Seen the Jane Fonda Aerobic VHS? is a strange bird in the Finnish rock scene not only because of it’s long name, but also because the band doesn’t have a guitar player. Instead melodies and distorted sound walls are created by good old Casio and Eco-organs. Packed with 60’s girl group/soul-melodies, bubble gum punk riffs and pounding drums, which will make your eardrums bleed, this newcomer is truly something to get to know.

Dallas Kalevala release a sparkling pop anthem ‘Moon Makes Me Happy’

Dallas_Kalevala_Moon_3000px

We are excited to announce that Dallas Kalevala are releasing their second official single ‘Moon Makes Me Happy’ today!

‘Moon Makes Me Happy’ is a sparkling pop-anthem about passion, lust and quilt. It tells how a one single blink of an eye could tear down everything. It’s not about the sun – it’s all about the moon.

It’s been said some songs write itself. This is definitely the one. I don’t even remember us writing this. It just appeared in the studio. Couple of fresh pots, few hours tracking and there it was. Lyricwise happened exactly same. It’s a strong story so we cut the bullshit and just sang. Simply the best,” describes Ville Malja.

Dallas Kalevala is fierce subarctic pop music. It floats naked among Iggy Pop and Justice on a cool summer night.

Ville Malja and Jussi Matikainen have been working on new music in various places, including Berlin, Reykjavik and Kokemäki, to name just a few. The journey they have taken has provoked them to discard safe old routines and find new surprising paths.

“The feeling of being an outsider has always troubled me and has not gotten any easier over the years. Luckily it generates creativity instead of apathy. After the sixth Lapko album I started to feel that I have to rush off into an adventure on my own and start a new band. I found Jussi waiting in the same corridor and together we bought a pile of airline tickets and are now driving fast into the sunrise with a crystal clear vision in the windshield,” Malja explains. ”Dallas Kalevala is the melting pot for the east and the west, leather and linen, bitter and sweet. It combines Carelian lament singers with Coca Cola.”

Dallas Kalevala is currently finalizing their new songs with the Teosto-rewarded producer Niko Liinamaa, also known as Kalifornia Keke. The band recently signed a management deal with VILD Music, who will also release the first singles from the upcoming album on their label VILD Recordings.

The release will set to follow a performance at one of the biggest Finnish summer festivals, Ruisrock and the band’s first club show tour, taking in 11 dates from Helsinki, all the way up to the northern capital Oulu. Live the band extends to a three piece group when bass player Maria Rantanen joins Malja and Matikainen on stage.

Dallas Kalevala – Animal Magnetism out now!

Dallas Kalevala - Animal Magnetism Cover Art by Ville Malja
Cover art by Ville Malja

We are excited to announce that Dallas Kalevala will release their first official single Animal Magnetism today May 5th 2017.

Animal Magnetism is a positively charged outburst of the animal within. The post modern human being is a medley of evergrowing conscious layers and the longing for the intuitive, living substance and immorality.
Animal Magnetism is the first song that Jussi Matikainen and Ville Malja wrote together, and it paved the way for Dallas Kalevala’s first steps.

“The birth of Animal Magnetism was not in any way premeditated. It surfaced with no difficulty, with the ease of an airbubble rising up. Before we wrote the song, Jussi told me that there is something interesting brewing. Right after the first demo I felt like we are facing something complitely new. As for the melodies and lyrics, we aimed to combine classic rock and 90s eurodance with the harsh spiritual conditions of the arctic nature. We strived to make music for the 2020s. The song became this crunchy, full-on crazy psychedelic pop-trip”, Malja describes.

Jaakko Aukusti returns with a new track “Moon Tower”

moon-tower-single-cover-art-by-emma-larkovuo

“Moon Tower is sunny, effects-laden psych-pop of the highest order.”
– The Line of Best Fit

Premiered by The Line of Best Fit, the new Jaakko Aukusti single Moon Tower is the third single release from Jaakko Aukusti’s forthcoming debut album Mountain, due to be released January 20th 2017.

Moon Tower meddles with the themes of settling down, early-20’s-anxiety and convincing yourself you’re exactly where you need to be.

The song was originally an almost baroque-pop piece with tons of nylon-string acoustic guitars and loads of handclaps, but that version never ”took off”, so to say. In the studio with producer Artturi Taira the acoustic guitar tracks were cut up and driven through some effects and a sequencer – creating the hyperactive yet hypnotic cyborg-esque guitar loop that drives the track forward. With the loop as a guideline the song took a new form and arranged itself around the will of the guitar, diving boldly into the place where Simon & Garfunkel shake hands with the guys from Animal Collective and the guy who did all the soundtracks to all the best SNES videogames,” Jaakko Aukusti describes.

Hailing from Turku, Finland, Jaakko Aukusti is a musician-multi-instrumentalist who makes sort-of-pop-ish music coloured with playful arrangements and unconventional song structures. His debut EP, Volcano, was released via VILD Recordings early in 2015. The single Shadow Boxer claimed loads of radio attention in Finland and stirred music enthusiasts also abroad in publications like Indie Shuffle.

Jaakko Aukusti’s previous single releases Kiasma, Himalaya and Oasis caught the attention from the likes of Clash, The Line of Best Fit, All Things Go and Fame Magazine and also tons of smaller music blogs around Europe and U.S.A.

White Balance’s new single “Home”

COVER ART: Juho Länsiharju

White Balance are releasing their new single Home and the premier of the song was on Clash Music yesterday.

Home is a song that captures a moment of isolation. It’s like those childhood summers when you forgot which day or what time it was, and you could hide yourself from the world. “We were in the countryside when this song was written, and I started feeling like that again. It’s both soothing and agonizing at the same time”, Maaria, the singer of White Balance, says.

The video of Home is coming out soon too!
